Blackhawks Officially Recall No. 3 Pick Anton Frondell From Sweden, Expected to Debut This Week

The Recall

The Chicago Blackhawks officially recalled forward Anton Frondell from Djurgårdens IF of the Swedish Hockey League on Tuesday morning. Frondell, 18, is listed as No. 15 on the roster and has joined the team in New York ahead of a four-game East Coast road trip that opens Tuesday night against the Islanders. It's the most anticipated Blackhawks prospect debut since Connor Bedard arrived in Pittsburgh in October 2023.

Head coach Jeff Blashill made his intentions clear before Sunday's game against Nashville. When asked where Frondell would fit in when he arrived, Blashill didn't hedge: "I'm a throw him into the fire kind of coach. But not always. It's all situational. But in this one, he's gonna get thrown into the fire." When pressed further, he added: "He'll be with a good player, for sure."

The expectation is that Frondell slots in on the left wing alongside Bedard on the top line, with Andre Burakovsky on the right side. Ryan Greene — who has been on Bedard's wing for most of the season — could shift to center the third line, a move Blashill has said he wants to experiment with before the season ends. Insider Frank Seravalli reported that the Blackhawks also want to get a look at Frondell at center later in the stretch run.

Unlike fellow prospect Sacha Boisvert, whose debut remains on hold while he awaits a U.S. work visa, Frondell already completed the immigration process when he signed his entry-level contract last summer. He is eligible to play immediately. Whether the debut comes Tuesday against the Islanders or later in the week remains to be seen — Scott Powers of The Athletic indicated it could come later this week — but Blashill's pregame comments suggest sooner rather than later.

The Contract Wrinkle

There is one thing worth watching. If Frondell plays in 10 or more games this season, the first year of his three-year, $2.925 million entry-level deal officially burns. With 12 games remaining on the schedule, the Blackhawks will likely cap him at nine appearances to preserve a contract year heading into 2026-27. That still gives him a meaningful runway to get his feet wet at the NHL level before making a push for a full-time roster spot next fall.

Who Is Anton Frondell?

Frondell was born in Trångsund, Sweden — about 10 miles south of Stockholm — and has been in the Djurgårdens system since he was 15. He was selected third overall by the Blackhawks at the 2025 NHL Draft in Los Angeles, the second forward off the board behind Michael Misa. NHL Central Scouting had him ranked as the No. 1 international skater in the class.

He is listed at 6-foot-1 and 198 pounds, but the numbers understate his physical presence. NHL Central Scouting's Jukka-Pekka Vuorinen called him "a military tank" with "strong legs, perfect balance in his skating" and "a nifty wrist shot" with "a solid and accurate one-timer release." At the Draft Combine, when players were polled on who was the most difficult to compete against, Frondell's name came up more than anyone else's. His Djurgårdens linemate and fellow first-round pick Victor Eklund put it simply: "Anton is a tank on ice. He has a shot like a missile."

This season in the SHL, Frondell backed all of that up. He posted 28 points — 20 goals and 8 assists — in 43 regular-season games, leading all SHL rookies in goals and finishing fourth on Djurgårdens in scoring. Those 20 goals made him just the fourth 18-year-old in SHL history to reach that mark, joining Thomas Sandstrom, Markus Naslund, and Daniel Sedin, who was the last to do it in 1998-99. Frondell also added 2 points in 3 SHL playoff games, including an overtime game-winning goal, before Djurgårdens was eliminated on March 21 — clearing the way for this recall.

Prior to this season, Frondell helped Djurgårdens earn promotion from Sweden's second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan to the SHL, putting up 25 points in 29 regular-season games and 7 more in 16 playoff contests during the 2024-25 campaign. He was named the league's Rookie of the Year.

On the international stage, Frondell was one of the best players at the 2026 World Junior Championship in St. Paul, Minnesota. He scored five goals and added three assists in seven games as Sweden won gold for the first time since 2012, ending a 14-year drought. Frondell was named the tournament's Best Forward and selected to the All-Star Team. His defining moment came in the semifinal against Finland — he scored the shootout-winning goal in the eighth round, on his third attempt, to send Sweden to the gold medal game.

What This Means

The Blackhawks are 26-31-13 with 12 games left. They're not playing for anything in the standings. What they are playing for is answers — specifically, whether the 18-year-old power forward they drafted third overall can hold his own alongside their franchise center. Bedard has 65 points in 56 games this season and has spent three years waiting for a legitimate top-line running mate. Frondell, with his size, his shot, and his ability to finish around the net, is built to be that player. These final weeks won't tell the whole story, but they'll tell the Blackhawks enough to know what next season's top line should look like.

The Blackhawks play the Islanders on Tuesday (6:00 p.m. CT, ESPN), followed by games at New Jersey on Thursday, the Rangers on Saturday, and Buffalo on Sunday to close out the road trip. Chicago's first home game with Frondell available would be March 30 against Winnipeg.
