MILWAUKEE โ This one is going to leave a mark.
The White Sox scored four runs in the first inning on a Colson Montgomery grand slam, led 7-2 through three innings, and lost 9-7 to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon after a catastrophic six-run eighth inning. Christian Yelich's pinch-hit three-run homer โ a 421-foot blast off Seranthony Domรญnguez โ was the dagger. The Brewers completed the sweep. The Sox are 0-3.

Montgomery's Grand Slam Set the Stage
For three innings, this looked like the game the White Sox had been waiting for all series. Colson Montgomery crushed a grand slam to center field โ 405 feet off Brandon Sproat โ in the first inning to put the Sox up 4-0. It was his first career grand slam and the kind of moment that makes you believe the former first-round pick is ready to anchor this lineup.
Munetaka Murakami followed with a solo shot in the second inning โ his third homer in three career MLB games โ and Montgomery added an RBI single later in the frame to make it 6-2. Everson Pereira went deep to center (403 feet) in the third for his first hit and homer of the season. By the time the dust settled, the Sox had 7 runs on 9 hits and had chased Sproat after just 3 innings (7 ER, 3 HR, Game Score 18).
The Bullpen Held โ Until It Didn't
Anthony Kay was solid in his 2026 debut โ 4.2 innings, 3 hits, 2 earned runs. The only damage was a Gary Sรกnchez two-run homer in the first that cut the lead to 4-2. Justin Leasure and Grant Taylor bridged the middle innings without major incident. At 7-3 heading into the eighth, the White Sox were six outs away from their first win.
They didn't get them. Chris Murphy entered the eighth and immediately combusted โ 3 hits, a wild pitch, and 4 earned runs in a third of an inning. Brice Turang singled home a run to make it 7-4. Luis Rengifo singled to center to score two more. Suddenly it was 7-6 with runners on and two outs, and Domรญnguez was summoned to get the final out.
He didn't get it either. Yelich, pinch-hitting for Sรกnchez, turned on a pitch and drove it 421 feet to right field for a three-run homer that gave Milwaukee a 9-7 lead. Every run in the inning scored with two outs. The Brewers' bullpen โ Grant Anderson, Jared Koenig, Jake Woodford, and Tylor Megill โ threw 6 scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts to keep Milwaukee in it long enough for the lineup to break through.
Murakami: Three Games, Three Homers
Lost in the wreckage of this collapse is a legitimately historic start from Murakami. The Japanese slugger has homered in each of his first three MLB games โ a solo shot in his debut on Opening Day, a solo shot in Game 2, and another solo blast Sunday. He's slashing .333/.538/1.333 through three games with 3 homers, 3 RBI, and 3 walks. The power is translating exactly as advertised. Murakami is carrying the weight the White Sox need him to carry.
Swept and 0-3
The Brewers took all three games โ 14-2, 6-1, and 9-7 โ outscoring the Sox 29-10 in the series. This is the worst possible way to start a season that already came with modest expectations. Losing 14-2 and 6-1 is one thing. Leading 7-2 and losing? That's a different kind of gut punch, one that lingers in a clubhouse.
Up Next
The White Sox head to Miami for a three-game series starting Tuesday. A change of scenery โ and a change of opponent โ can't come soon enough.
